Rameswaram lies on Pamban Island, off the coast of Tamil Nadu. Its Ramanathaswamy Temple, dedicated to Shiva, is both one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites, which makes it a destination for pilgrims from across India.
The corridors
The temple is famous for its pillared corridors, among the longest in any Indian temple. Walking them, with their rows of carved pillars receding into the distance, is one of the defining experiences of a visit.
The sacred wells
Many pilgrims bathe in the series of sacred wells, or theerthams, within the complex before entering the sanctum. If you plan to take part, bring a change of clothes.
