Rishikesh sits where the Ganga emerges from the Himalayan foothills in Uttarakhand. For centuries it has drawn pilgrims and ascetics, and more recently students of yoga from around the world.
The evening aarti
At dusk, lamps are offered to the river at several ghats, including Triveni Ghat. Arrive early to find a place to sit, and follow the lead of those around you during the ceremony.
Gateway to the hills
Rishikesh is a common starting point for the Char Dham Yatra, and many pilgrims spend a night here before travelling further into the mountains.
